Lake Powell

Lake Powell

After leaving the Grand Canyon we had the choice of going back towards Zion and taking a detour over Glen Canyon dam to see Lake Powell. I didn't know much about Lake Powell. The route too and from the dam passes by the "vermilion cliffs" which are as you might expect, more purple than red. Sadly we didn't have sunshine for good photographs of these but they are spectacular as well.

We moved up the Colorado, past the Navajo bridge (one of the early bridges over the river, from which I shot a panorama) and then came upon Lake Powell near sunset.

As controversial as the damming that formed it is, Lake Powell is breathtaking. They call it the "Grand Canyon with water" and while I don't know if I would go that far, it certainly exceeded my expectations.

In particular we came to a particularly beautiful sunset, though all the sunsets there defy description. I shot one of my favourite panoramas there, right on the Arizona and Utah border.

We had to leave quickly after the sunset, but I decided I would return to Lake Powell, and did just a month later.

Day comes to a close. We watched the sunset too long and thus will miss the rest of the vermilion cliffs
