My wife was teaching music at an elementary school on a U. S. military base in Bad Toelz, Germany (billeting a Green Beret unit about 30 miles from Munich, the home of Oktoberfest). Her students were largely American dependent children of the soldiers stationed at the base, and these children often had some interesting ideas about their host country. One day my wife was giving a lesson about sacred music, and asked her first grade class if they knew what a monk was. One little boy piped up: "Of course we know what a monk is, Mrs De Wilde. Monks make beer!"
