Well, all this time we've been accusing Mulroney of parroting US presidents, but now the whole country "Just Said No". In the midst of all the news broadcasts, which consisted mainly of excited "No" fans and press conferences, intermixed with excited Jays fans and press conferences, I wondered how the Jays had voted. Then realized, of course, that none of them are Canadian, so of course they didn't vote. I have three theories about the referendum: (1) If the question had been worded "Do you refuse to accept the consistuational amendments ..." then the amendments would have passed, simply by virtue of the Canadian tendency to say "No" to any government proposal. (2) Canadians are so indecisive that it would be impossible to get more than a 55% majority on any issue whatsoever. (With the possible exception of "Mulroney really isn't doing a very good job, and frankly, if it's not too much trouble, I think that, perhaps, he should consider stepping down.") (3) The new set of the CBC newsroom is a castoff from an old episode of Star Trek. ("We canna take the budget cuts any longa, Peter!")
