Solution for the Year 2000 Problem

ryan+@andrew.cmu.edu (Ryan Troll)
(smirk, computers)

I recently received a phone call from a gentleman who said he had a solution to the Year 2000 problem.

His solution was based on the assumption that all dates in computer programs are comprised of 6 characters, IE: "070476" for July 4th, 1976. As there are two digits for the year, he suggested we use Roman Numerals. In the year 2000, this is MM.

"Besides," he said, "They've been around for a long time, and everybody knows how to use them."

When asked how this solution would work in the year 2001, he said, "You're smart college fellers. You figure it out."
