Today, on the 4th day of 100+ degree heat here on the coast of South Florida, I suggested to my son that maybe we should go over to the beach and take a dip to cool off.
His reply was "I can't stand the salt in the water."
My response was "It's not any saltier than we are. The salinity is exactly the same as human blood. Or tears. Or sweat, for that matter. It's like going back to the womb."
He saw a connection I had missed. "That settles it. I don't like to sweat. I don't like to cry. I don't like to bleed. I don't want to go back into Mommy. So why should I want to swim in the ocean?"
We went to the mall instead.
