The Man with the Flat

A man was driving home from work one day when suddenly he got a flat tire. As he is got out of his car to change it, he noticed that he was just outside the local insane asylum.

He began to change his tire, and he unscrewed all of the bolts. He set them on the ground, reached for his handkerchief to mop his brow, and plop plop plop, all the bolts rolled into the storm sewer.

Just then, from behind the fence of the insane asylum, a man called out to him. "Excuse me, sir, but if you just unscrew one bolt from each of the other three tires, you will be able to attach your new tire well enough to go home."

"Why thank you," said the man with the flat. "You know, I'm astonished by your level-headedness and keen common sense. Give me your name, and tomorrow at the office I will make some inquiries on your behalf, and see if I can do anything to get you out of here."

The man with the flat turned then and did as the other man behind the fence had suggested. He stood up pleased with his work and opened the car door to go home.

Just then a rock, the size of a plum, hit him hard on the side of the head. "Hey, wait a minute," he said, touching a lump beginning to rise. "You were thinking so clearly, and you've really helped me out. Why would you do a thing like that?"

"You won't forget me now, will you?" said the man behind the fence.
