My daughter attends a very small private school in a very small town in rural Virginia. Many children are "legacies" of parents from years past. One of the advantages of such a small school is the "family" atmosphere. One of the disadvantages is that everyone knows each other's family business. At the first parent-teacher conference of the school year last week, the headmaster was addressing the parents about school discipline. Parents are notified of serious infractions and are expected to contact the office to acknowledge the notification. The headmaster said he received a note last year from "Jimmy's" mother which read: "Please excuse Jimmy's behavior in school yesterday. He is just like his father. I rest my case."
