Today (June 12, 1997) the New York Times carried a story about a direct marketing outfit that contracted prison inmates to process consumer records. Some prisonners used the information to harass customers and after a public outcry the company switched to alternative source of labor. The article quotes John Benestante, director of Texas state prison industries, "We lost some damn good programmers -- pedophiles... Some of our best computer operatives were sex offenders."
