A friend sent me this tidbit of scientific news... A colleague here at work does research in visualization. I recently noticed an IEEE paper on his desk entitled "3D Virtual Colonoscopy." The abstract says "Using 3D reconstruction of helical CT data and volume visualization techniques, we generate images of the inner surface of the colon as if the viewer's eyes were inside the colon." This is potentially a significant breakthrough in the detection and treatment of diseases of the colon. In addition, for those accustomed to having their head up their ass, this presumably could lead to a practical alternative.
