My roommate, who works at the server farm at Concentric network, reported some problems because they were hosting some of the web pages of Highersource.com, and they suddenly started getting a couple of million hits per hour. They had to suddenly move them to new servers. Their new web service contract will include a clause requiring you to give 24 hours advance notice before everybody at your site commits ritual suicide, so they don't get surprised by this sort of load in the future. However, such a clause may be difficult to enforce.
