[true story, punchline courtesy of Steve Ells] As an aircraft owner, I recently got to experience one of the true joys of airplane ownership: buying an engine overhaul. Overhauling an aircraft engine costs (for a single) about a quarter of the airplane's worth. When I went to the shop where they were completing reinstallation of the newly overhauled engine I remarked to an on-looker that I had finally learned what holds airplanes up in the air--it's money. He replied that he had had the same experience with boats: the proverbial wood-lined hole in the water into which you throw money. At this point the mechanic, with a twinkle in his eye, said, "I don't know; but I was always told that if it flies, floats, or fucks, it's cheaper to rent!"
