From a post in the newsgroup comp.risks Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1993 13:48:08 -0400 (EDT) From: Jim Huggins <huggins@eecs.umich.edu> Subject: Virus distributed during college computer sale The University of Michigan annually holds a "Computer Kickoff Sale", an opportunity for students to buy personal computer systems through UM for reduced prices. This year, a few students got an added bonus: a virus. Four hundred Macintosh systems sold on the first day of the sale had the nVIR virus included on the standard distribution disks prepared by the Information Technology Division (ITD). The source of the virus is currently unknown. \......... Mr X., a first year student who bought a Macintosh through the sale, commented, "I assumed everything would be sterile because the disk came in a plastic bag." ----------------------------------------------------------------
