In Canada's Constitutional Referendum next Monday, most provinces are expected to split the vote approximately 60% No and 40% Yes. One major exception is Newfoundland...according to recent polls there, virtually everyone is planning to vote No. The reason behind this? Newfoundland hopes that by rejecting the constitutional amendments, Quebec will separate from Canada, and the Newfoundlanders will be one and a half hours closer to Toronto. [note: for non-Canadians who don't understand this, Newfoundland is one and a half time zones from Ontario, with Quebec inbetween. Yes, one and a half time zones...one of our more glaring national and cultural oddities. The major reason for the referendum is to settle some long-standing disputes between the national government and Quebec] --Chuck Cazabon, cazabon@hercules.uregina.ca * alternate address: cazabon@meena.uregina.ca
