WASHINGTON (AP) President George Bush was denied NEA funding today for his performance art piece "Operation Desert Shield", which was to have begun next Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the NEA denied that Bush's funding had been denied on the basis of any perceived obscenity. "We grant funds solely on the basis of artistic merit, and unfortunately Mr. Bush's piece shows none." When asked for comments, Mr. Bush told reporters, "I'm not worried about the funding thing . . . where there's a will, there's a way, and I'm sure that I'll be able to pull something together in the next week. Hmm, maybe I should talk to Congress after all."
