I recently received news from a friend close to, well sort of close to, 'Knuth' (must be said with a tone of awe and respect). As the writer of teX, the slave/guts of LATEx [1], he was asked why he went through all the trouble to re-invent the wheel - after all what about troff ? His reply: "Well... being an old Cobol programmer - I missed having to type 3 times the code to get the same results as with traditional software [2]." [1] - LAtEx can be mispronounced as the non-oil based paint, but it is not as easy to apply. [2] - even most lAtEx code is a bit \begin{comment} wordy \end{comment}. We now know better: Real programmers use troff. Business students use lATEx/CoBOl. -- Joe Miller Michigan State University An old troff user who's heard too much ruh ha ha about lAteX.
