There's a new $99 dedicated "internet appliance" called the I-Opener. <http://www.netpliance.com> It's being stocked by Circuit City exclusively.
NetPliance went IPO last week; just about when the Linux crowd figured you could add a laptop hard-disk and turn the I-Opener into a fullbore machine easily..... and skip the mfgr's required ISP service. When slashdot reported this, every Circuit City in the country went to "backorder" in 24 hours.
Now CC is getting annoyed about all the nerds showing up, ordering quantity "n" of a near-zero-profit box, and wanting them yesterday... then leaving without buying the service contract, Monster Cable, fuzzy dice or any other gravy.
Someone on the iopener list finally expressed it best:
"this whole thing is just karmic retribution for DIVX"
