The Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was assassinated, was in disrepair for years. Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, located across the street, bought the property intending to tear it down and build offices. However, there was some community opposition seeking to preserve the building. CPH compromised by preserving the facade, inside a larger glass front. It's pretty minimal, though there may be some kind of exhibit inside as well.
In what must be a sign of the times, there's a coffee shop in one of the storefronts, called Caffe X. I wondered exactly how "Caffe X" preserved Malcolm X's legacy and thought that perhaps they only sold black coffee. Then I realized that Malcolm X had provided them a perfect slogan - "Buy any beans necessary."
