Voices To the Playa

With all the chaos in getting things working, the voice mail was not attended to. People did call it, and left a series of amazing messages. Some funny, some sad (that they didn't get through) and some poignant. Almost all are heartwarming, and provide a welcome taste of the emotions of life on the Playa. It's surprising what you'll feel as you listen.

Here's a chance to listen to them. I think they're all fun, but the best are bold, and the near-best are in italics below.

About the 4 playing formats (WAV is your best choice.)

• [WAV] is the original file, in uLaw wav, which is a special form of wav for phone calls. These are actually smaller than the MP3s, but some systems may have trouble playing with them. They are your first choice. You may need to disable the Windows Media Toolbar that tries to play wav files inside the browser, and go to Media Player.
• [Ogg] is Ogg Vorbis format, a free, better MP3 style codec. These are good quality, and smaller than the WAV files. If you don't have a Vorbis player or plugin, go to the Vorbis web site
• [MP3] does not handle uLaw wav phone calls well, so these are larger and poorer quality than the [Wav] links. Use only if nothing else works.
• Speex is a new free codec designed for phone speech. The files are half the size and good quality. Speex players and codecs can be found at The Speex Website. Then download this zip file of speex encodings. Best if you are on dial-up or can't get WAV to work.

Since these messages were all left for anybody random to hear, I don't think there is an expectation of privacy on them, but nonetheless if your voice is here and you don't want it here, let me know. (btm at templetons.com)
