Brad Templeton Photos: Bosphorus

Bosphorus

(1280 x 854 - 114K)
In the old city of Istanbul, lots of the more interesting antiquities. Note also the volume of traffic.

(1280 x 854 - 142K)
The shores are littered with nicer apartment buildings and mosques.

(1280 x 854 - 121K)
Another view of their grand suspension bridge. Until that time the only way to get from one side of the city to the other was by Ferry.

(1280 x 854 - 93K)
A castle in a small town near the exit to the Black Sea

(1280 x 854 - 88K)
The Club Med 2 is a strange cruise ship with sails, also on an eclipse trek and also sailing through the Bosphorus with us.

(1280 x 854 - 108K)
The mosque of Suyleman, and the Blue Mosque.

(1280 x 854 - 149K)
We pose in front of the fortress of Europe. They built forts on both sides, at the closest point.

(1280 x 854 - 189K)
Some of the homes of the rich, right on the strait, with their pools and sunrooms and docks. There are tons of these so while the average income in Turkey may not be so great, obviously a good number have the good life.

(1280 x 854 - 139K)
A small harbour on the strait, away from Istanbul.

(1280 x 854 - 145K)
The aft deck, as K talks to some of our dinner companions. It's early morning and we've just passed the Dardinelles and are heading for Istanbul

(683 x 1024 - 55K)
A lovely shot by Kathryn of the sea below us. Those are our shadows on the water as we lean on the railing and take the shot.

(1280 x 854 - 111K)
The bridge over the Bosphorus along with oceanside palaces and mosques.

(1280 x 854 - 153K)
K. examines the shore as we pass an ancient fort.

(1280 x 854 - 122K)
The fortress of Asia

(1280 x 854 - 106K)
One of the palaces on the strait, surrounded by the homes of the wealthy.

(1280 x 854 - 128K)
Our rather colourful pilot boat leads us through the strait. Upon arrival the Captain said he was told we could either wait four hours or pay for a pilot boat. He said he would pay the extortion. Turns out though that they had a legitimate reason. A supertanker was going through the strait the other way, and I can see why they would want to be cautious.

The view from the bow of the Marco Polo as we sail through the Bosphorus, near the exit
